WHO Are You Wearing?
Friends! I had an “AHA” moment recently regarding the age-old question (think back to your high school days!), “What are you wearing?”
Oh, but it has a new twist on it now thanks to author Savannah Guthrie telling us from when she covered the red carpet, the big question of the evening was not “What,” but “WHO are you wearing?”
I’m sure whatever designer the celebrities mentioned was sure to enjoy his or her pat on the back while the celebrity seemed to enjoy wearing the outfit. Some outfits are wild, others simply elegant. Savannah confessed she was often tempted to ask, “And WHY, exactly, are you wearing that?”
A couple of weeks ago, some girlfriends and I gathered to learn about healthy food to eat (thank you Dr. Pam Stein!) and to discuss Savannah’s newest book, Mostly What God Does: Reflections on Seeking and Finding His Love Everywhere.
Never having enough time for discussion, I thought I’d offer you one of the three pearls we discussed. I recommend you try Savannah’s book as it includes thirty-one “essays” as she calls them, which cover pretty much any topic you can think of. One favorite is Chapter 15, Unsubscribing from Myself …LOL.
So let’s return to the red carpet as this essay (Chapter 13) is called Garment of Praise. One thing I didn’t get to show to my friends the other day was a picture of my Grandmother (Daddy’s Mother) who was quite the fashionista of the family.
I found the below pic of her with another couple in Palm Beach. Believe it or not, I just happen to still have the very dress and coat she’s wearing in the photo. I have yet to attempt to wear it somewhere…like where?
Grandmother could’ve been “red carpet ready,” don’t you think? (Grandmother is on the left in the photo and the real dress and coat are pictured below.)
Savannah turns the table on the question of “Who are you wearing,” by asking, “But what if it is a penetrating spiritual question?”
She points us to Isaiah 61:1-3 that says,
The progression is fun to read: “If praise is a garment, WHO is wearing it?”
Drum roll… “WE are!!! God tells us to praise him not for what it does for Him, but for what it does for us.”
Watch this if/then scenario:
Psalm 147:1 says,
All this to say, let’s mentally each morning put on our “garment of praise.” Think of it as yet another dress code like what we talked about in two posts back in June: Let’s Discuss “Dress Code”: To Embrace ‘em or Ditch ‘em? and Another Twist on Dress Codes to Open Your Eyes…
This concept of “garment of praise” is a great reminder for all of us. And again, this particular chapter/essay is only one of thirty-one to open your eyes!
Now run, don’t walk to your nearest bookstore and grab Mostly What God Does by Savannah Guthrie. Her funny outlook and fresh ideas on faith is encouraging for us in this crazy world we live in.
‘Til next time!
