Hot off the press! Don’t miss “A Piece of the Moon” by Chris Fabry...

Friends!  Just last week, Chris Fabry’s latest novel, A Piece of the Moon, released.  You do NOT want to miss this page-turner!

A long time fan of Chris’, this novel does not disappoint. Liz Curtis Higgs’ endorsement offers, “A Piece of the Moon has it all. Quirky, endearing characters. A rich story arc full of surprises. Lines so funny you’ll want to read them aloud to anybody within earshot. And a tender thread of redemption that runs from first page to last. Spending time with Waite and TD and Clay and Pidge and all the other folks in Emmaus was pure joy. The best novel I’d read in ages.”

I first learned about Chris from Liz years ago when our book club at Southeast Christian Church read one of his first novels, Dogwood. A few years later, at Middletown United Methodist Church’s book club, we read The Promise of Jesse Woods. Chris made us a twenty-three minute video of him speaking to us, telling us all about the story, how it came to be, all about the characters, etc. It was as if he was with us in the room. We marveled at his generosity with his time to do this for our little book club.

Chris is a ten talent guy.  He hosts the daily Chris Fabry Live radio show on Moody Radio, and has written over seventy books, some of which are in several categories:  fiction, non-fiction, film novelizations (War Room and Overcomer), and novels for children and young adults, such as coauthoring Left Behind: The Kids series with Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye, plus The Wormling series with Jerry B. Jenkins.  RPM is his latest series for kids, all about NASCAR. Oh, and one more tidbit:  Chris has won five Christy Awards, among many other awards.  Many times when I’m on the hunt for another book to read, I go see who’s won a Christy Award.  It’s a super resource for all you bibliophiles. Checkout www.christyawards.com

So allow me to share a few snippets of A Piece of the Moon.  My sweet husband, John, also read this book. He loved it as much as I did, so I’d definitely recommend it for guys and gals.  From the first page, you’ll be swept into the story as if you’re joining the characters.

We quickly meet several, each a “character” in Chris’ colorful, descriptive words to where if that person walked in the room, you’d recognize him or her immediately.  John and I both read various quotes out loud to each other, laughing our heads off.

Not without flaws, many of the characters you’ll relate to, sympathize with, and want to fix.  You’ll find surprises and plot twists at every turn. You will flat be floored, often.

The underlying quest is a treasure hunt.  Gideon Quidley, the mastermind behind the treasure and ark, intrigues many to find it, including a preacher who nearly falls to his death on the hunt.  There’s enough speculation to cause you to wonder if the ark truly exists or not. (Don’t miss the clues Gideon leaves from the Bible.  Some of the characters’ interpretations are clever, yet way off base, keeping us all guessing.)

Prayer plays a large role in the book as well.  It is beautifully done.  Gideon’s heart is for all to find the Lord and have a personal relationship with Him.

We readers get to see more than one character struggling with something and/or running from God. My favorite thing that happens is the Lord is still pursuing them either through a certain situation, or a person...While they try to run, they eventually turn to Him.  Relationships are renewed.  This is a good reminder for all of us that our Lord never quits pursuing us, wooing us to Him.

In my own life, I found myself surrounded by thousands of women at a Christian conference in the Opryland Hotel a few years ago.  One of the keynote speakers ran head on into me declaring she knew me.

Remember there were thousands of women at this event.  We scrolled backward thru’ the years and realized we were at the University of Kentucky at the same time, living in the same sorority house. What?

The difference was, back then, she was in what we dubbed the “God Squad.”  Yes, we made fun of those girls while they met and did Bible study while we went out to the bars.  I know...

But now, I was attending this Christian conference with my Bible study buddies, and this speaker and I realized we were now on the same page spiritually.  Was God incredible to orchestrate such a meeting?  To show me He’d never quit pursuing me all these years? The best!  It still is one of my biggest “spiritual markers” in my life.

Chris’ characters have spiritual markers in their lives, too, and you will get to witness many firsthand.  How he weaves the story together, right in the midst of a treasure hunt, is remarkable.

A love story blooms within the treasure hunt, we wonder if a prodigal will resurface, a young man with several struggles gains a family, a flood nearly ruins a town and you’ll never guess who saves residents in its path. Like me, you’ll be caught up with the rest of the town of Emmaus, looking everywhere for the ark and its’ contents.

Country 16, the radio station where several of the characters work, plays a large part in the book, too. Watching the  DJ’s and their different styles is a fun education—kind of a behind-the-scenes experience.

Another fun thing I like to do while reading a book is to hunt for the meaning of the title.  More than once I found it and made note of it:  A Piece of the Moon, but it’s not until the very end you find exactly the meaning.  It’s something I’d never have come up with—yet another treasure.

Now you know how we like to close:  “Run, don’t walk, to your nearest bookstore and snag a copy of A Piece of the Moon.”  You’ll love it! It would be an excellent book for your book club!

‘Til next time!
